China's top economic planning organization, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), launched a meeting regarding coal supply and demand with four domestic coal enterprises Wednesday, a spokesman for the China National Coal Association said Wednesday.

The NDRC made inquiries with domestic coal giants China Coal Energy, Shenhua Energy, Datong Coal and Inner Mongolia Yitai Group about coal production and requested these enterprises to ensure stable supplies of coal against the surge in coal prices and the shortage of coal in some areas of China.

The NDRC urged the firms to make early preparations for coal supplies to cope with a possible wide occurrence of electricity shortages in the country.

Summer is the traditional peak season in China for coal and electricity demand. China's Zhejiang and Hunan Provinces, along with Chongqing municipality, have suffered varying degrees of electricity shortages in the recent past.

BSPI data shows that the current market price of coal has increased to 808 yuan ($124) per ton, up 1.1 percent on last week's figure.
